Take Burn Risks Seriously – at Work and at Home

Skin burn cool water running

Our Emergency Management and Plano Fire-Rescue departments are drawing attention to National Burn Awareness Week. Each year during the first weeks of February,  these public safety groups beef up education to prevent as many burn and scalding incidents as possible. The American Burn Association warns of accidents involving:

  • Flammable liquid
  • Non-fire cooking
  • Gasoline
  • Electricity
  • Dry ice
  • Home medical oxy and more

An important thing to remember is the “3 Cs” of burn care: Cool – Cover – Call.

  • Run cool water over the affected area for three to five minutes
  • Call 911 if the burn area is larger than the palm of your hand
  • Cover the burn with a clean, dry cloth while transporting for medical care – no creams or home remedies if the area is larger than your palm

*Learn more from the U.S. Fire Administration’s prevention webpage.

Store liquids safely, handle combustible items with caution and have a fire extinguisher nearby. Create safer environments. Learn more with a visit to the American Burn Association’s webpage.
