This task is crucial to updating Plano's Heritage Preservation Plan, which serves as the guiding document for the city’s Heritage Preservation Program. The current Preservation Plan focuses on neighborhoods built up to 1969, but the 2023 update centers on the five-year period after. Surveys like these have evaluated known historical sites such as Downtown Plano, Haggard Park and several other landmarks throughout the City. Additionally, these studies identify properties and neighborhoods that recently, or will soon, cross the 50-year age threshold and may be considered "historic."
Areas that are ideal candidates for rezoning as Neighborhood Conservation Districts (NCDs) may also be flagged. An NCD protects a district’s architectural, physical and visual character.
