MRIs (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) can help detect a variety of health issues and if your doctor recommends getting one, you probably should. Sadly, these tests can be really expensive. Here are some tips to help you save money and still get the MRI you need!

• Avoid the hospital if possible. Do not get your MRI in the hospital. Emergency rooms get stuck with a lot of unpaid bills, and MRI costs are often increased to offset these losses. 
• Go to a freestanding clinic. Since they typically don’t have the bargaining power of large hospitals, more often they charge rates that are more digestible than those of a hospital.  
• You don’t have to go where your doctor tells you to go. Do your own research to find the most cost-effective and reliable MRI free-standing clinic. 
• Know your resources. Use the WebTPA Search Tool to find an affordable MRI. Here’s how:

Step 1: Log in to webtpa.com
Step 2: Click on “Find a provider” (left-hand side of screen)
Step 3: Click on “Find pricing for medical services” and then choose “Medical Services”
Step 4: Click on “Imaging” and a service (e.g. MRI) 
Step 5: Choose body part, with/without contrast OR with biopsy and/or removal of polyp, with/without D&C (helps determine more accurate pricing) OR “X” out of that option

You may need to adjust the distance or miles for more search options.
