American Red Cross Honors Chris Alban, a Team Plano Life Saver

Amer Red Cross award to Chris Alban (4)

Saving a life is cause to celebrate for Parks & Recreation Aquatic Supervisor Chris Alban. An act of heroism while vacationing in Mexico this spring earned him the American Red Cross’ most prestigious honor, the Certificate of Merit. Meagan Dulgar, the American Red Cross North Texas Region interim CEO, presented the medal and certificate during the October 24 Plano City Council meeting. Accepting the award with Chris was his wife Kelly.

The incident occurred in April when Chris noticed a woman floating face down in a pool. Realizing she was unresponsive and her lips were blue, he got her out of the water immediately. The woman’s pulse was weak, so Chris put her in the Red Cross recovery position after making sure emergency help was on the way.

“Because Chris was able to act quickly and decisively during a crisis, he showed rare and extraordinary courage and heroic action,” said Dulgar. The recognition, the organization’s oldest and highest award, is given to Red Cross certified individuals who use their life-saving skills learned through the American Red Cross. The certificate is signed by the president of the United States.

Alban has spent the last two decades of his life in and around water—first as a lifeguard and now as an aquatics facilities manager for our Parks & Recreation department.
