The Plano Police Department invites you to be part of the 2022 Peace Officers Memorial service on Thursday, May 19. During the third week in May, law enforcement agencies across the nation honor those who paid the ultimate sacrifice while serving their communities.
Police Chief Ed Drain said, “Plano has recognized our fallen peace officers for over 40 years. We believe it is important to continue this today – it’s important for the public, it is important for the officers currently working and most of all, it is important for the families of our fallen officers.”
This free event honors 13 Texas peace officers who made the ultimate sacrifice in service for their community. As of 2022, the City has lost four officers in the line of duty:
- Deputy City Marshal Green W. Rye – was shot attempting to stop a bank robbery in downtown Plano on February 28, 1920
- Officer Dayle Weston (Wes) Hardy – died after a motorcycle crash as he attempted to stop a speed violator on July 7, 2007
- Police Recruit Andrew Sockwell – died while training at the police academy on October 9, 2020
- Lieutenant Ernie Oldham – passed away from complications due to COVID-19 on September 16, 2021
Plano officials will be joined by representatives from several local-area police honor guards, Collin County leaders, and the other public servants.
