Don’t Put Your Health on Hold: Value Preventive Care

Preventive care

Imagine we took care of our bodies like we take care of our car – checking them regularly to ensure optimal performance. Regular medical check-ups confirm you’re healthy and detect early signs of illness. Getting medical treatment early increases our chances of living a long, enjoyable and healthy life, and helps our body run at an optimal level!

When the car makes a weird clunk or click, we figure out what’s wrong and fix it. If you listen to your body and notice something is off, address it. Go to the doctor for an examination! Show you value your body by exercising preventive measures!

Preventive health care is the most important type of health care you can engage in to manage your health. Plus, the majority of major risk factors, chronic illness and premature death become avoidable. Here are some reasons why preventive care is worth your time:

  • Detects medical conditions early. Many health issues can be treated or managed if caught early. Screenings are age/gender/family history appropriate, so work with your primary care physician (PCP) to determine the screening for you.
  • Reduces health risks overall. Preventive testing puts control of your health back in your hands. For example, a cholesterol check might indicate high levels causing your doctor to offer treatment plans to address the issues - healthy food, exercise or medications.
  • Extends quality of life. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), over 100,000 lives can be saved if people took advantage of preventive screenings to identify chronic disease and colon cancer. A stunning fact: 90% of people diagnosed with colon cancer could live at least five more years if it’s caught early.

According to the CDC, 6 in 10 adults struggle from a chronic disease like cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes, renal disease, etc. while 4 in 10Prevention is better than cure have at least TWO chronic diseases. Healthy People 2030 reports that obtaining preventive care diminishes the risk of disease, disabilities and rates of mortality. Despite this information, many people still do not take advantage of recommended health care service.

The City of Plano provides affordable and comprehensive medical benefits. This includes preventive care services covered at 100% for employees and dependents on the health plan. Establishing a relationship with a PCP is vital to the preventive care. Find a primary physician, if you don’t have one:

  • Contact Mary Korth, your Alight representative
