Essential Supervisory Skills: Documentation Basics
Thursday, April 27, 2023
This course is one of four Supervisor Mandatory training classes. The classes must be complete within 12 months of hire or promotion to a supervisory position. Click here for additional information.
You should already be a supervisor before attending.
The personnel file and manager’s department file should reflect an accurate, fair, legally-sound representation of decisions and actions that occur within the workplace. When the verbal story is not supported by written accounts, conflict, decreased trust, and heightened exposure to legal action often occur. This class will stress the importance of documentation as a tool to communicate, persuade, and defend. The following concepts will be explored:
- Role of documentation in achieving clarity regarding work assignments, roles, desired outcomes, and defensibility of actions
- Importance of active listening, tone, and word choice
- Knowing the audience to whom you’re telling a story
- Importance of aligning actions and documentation with relevant policies, laws, and practices
