Turn Challenges into Opportunities – Build Personal Resilience

Resilience smiley face

The noun resilience is defined as “the ability to recover quickly from difficulties; toughness.” Are you born with flexible talent for springing back when distressed or is this a cultivated skill? Some really smart people have pondered questions like this for a very long time.

The brain is a powerful organ capable of tremendous things. There are professionals who think of the brain like a muscle, able to be trained to improve how it works. Here are six ways you can train or develop your resilience:

  • Make Connections – accepting help and support from those who care about you and listen to you strengthens your resilience!Resilience graphic
  • Keep Things in Perspective – when you're facing a stressful event, try to consider the situation in a broader context and keep a long-term perspective about it. Try to avoid catastrophic thinking.
  • Avoid Seeing Crisis as an Insurmountable Problem – you can't change the fact that stressful events happen, but what you can change (and control) is how you react to them.
  • Accept the fact that Change is a Part of Life – probably one of the hardest things we can do is accept that the only constant thing in life is change. By doing so, you're able to focus on the things you can change; keeping in mind the circle of control.
  • Look for Opportunities for Self-Discovery – people learn things about themselves as they overcome personal obstacles. Some even find they've grown a bit because of those challenging experiences.
  • Maintain a Hopeful Outlook – having an optimistic outlook encourages you to expect good things will happen in life. What's important is to visualize what you “want” instead of worrying about what you “fear.”
