MUST-dos When You’re Ready to Retire: It's a Process

Retirement party

Retiring from the City of Plano is a process with important steps to follow. It’s been a great career and the exact date to start your next great adventure is set, but you can't get the party started just yet. The first thing to do, after formally resigning, is to contact Fannie Layer, senior human resources analyst, and schedule an “out-processing” meeting. Ideally, this needs to happen 45 to 60 days prior to your determined retirement date.

The meeting generally takes about an hour. Be sure to bring the following items when you see Fannie:

  • driver license
  • copy of spouse’s driver license (if applicable)
  • a voided check
  • beneficiary information (name, social, address, date and proof of birth)
  • Medicare Card (if applicable)

Another important part of the exit process is completing the Retirement Paperwork Packet which can be found in the Human Resources Retirement Center. This lengthy document, also known as the TMRS Service Retirement Packet, will require time to properly read and fill out. The forms in the packet cover topics like Partial Lump Sum Distribution, Special Tax Notice, Electronic Deposit Authorization and the different Retirement Plan Options, to name a few.

Let Fannie help you navigate this daunting process and start your well-deserved retirement in the best way possible. Email your questions or call her at 972-941-5019, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
