Plano Rewarded for Great Texas Recycles Day Video

KTB Media Communications Award 2

The City won a state award for a creative sustainability video produced last fall. Keep Texas Beautiful (KTB) took notice of the production in the Media and Communications category.  Director of Environmental Health and Sustainability (EHS) Rachel Patterson thanked the team, “This award is for a Texas Recycles Day video that Marketing and Community Engagement (MCE) producers put together. Due to their efforts we were able to collect 31,260 pound of recyclables in just three hours back in November. Through the successful marketing campaign launched by MCE, the event collected 12% more pounds than last year."

“People love a good story,” Todd Rice (Sr. Marketing Coordinator) said when addressing the council and citizens. “We wanted to feature items in the video that people can reuse…like an old bike in the garage that gets new life and now provides transportation for a needy child."

Texas Recycles Day encourages residents to rid garages and storage units of gently-used unwanted items – sports equipment, clothing, housewares, books, appliances, etc. These items are donated to community and non-profits for re-purposing and diversion from Plano’s landfill.  See the impact this event had on the city.

“Our job is to help communicate messages to constituents in Plano…to all members of our community. There are a lot of ways that we (MCE) do that working with every department and with City Council. It’s our pleasure to serve.”

The Keep Texas Beautiful Media Award recognizes the public awareness and education efforts of the media in support of environmental issues. KTB is a certified state affiliate of Keep America Beautiful and celebrates its 50th anniversary this year with a renewed commitment to make Texas communities better places to live, work and play.

Rachel Patterson (director of EHS), Heather Merchant (Education Manager for EHS), Shannah Hayley (director of Marketing and Community Engagement) and Todd Rice (Sr. Marketing Coordinator) were front and center for City Council’s acknowledgement. This year's Texas Recycles Day event is November 11. Stay tuned to Team Plano for details.
