Clean, Separate, Cook and Chill for Food Safety

Food poisoning

The symptoms of food poisoning are quite memorable. With September being National Food Safety Month, make it your business to learn how to avoid feeling those symptoms from home-cooked meals.

Improper food handling can cause uncomfortable stomach cramping, nausea, vomiting or diarrhea. Depending on the severity of the condition, cases can be mild and often resolved without treatment. However, some incidents require more serious measures before you feel better.Food Safety chart

Foodborne illnesses caused by eating dishes contaminated with infectious organisms (bacteria and parasites) are both common and avoidable. There are four easy-to-remember steps to safeguard your family from food poisoning:

  • Clean – wash hands, utensils, fruits and veggies
  • Separate – use different cutting boards for different types of food
  • Cook – be mindful of proper cooking temperatures for food, primarily meats
  • Chill – keep your fridge below 40° F
