Plano Makes a Big Deal of National Park and Recreation Month

Proclamation Natl Park Rec Month

Our beautiful green spaces and irresistible leisure programs have a tremendous impact on people’s lives. Acknowledging July as National Park and Recreation Month during the June 24 City Council meeting is one way Plano recognizes the immeasurable benefits of having a great Parks and Recreation Department.

Director Robin Reeves and several senior staff members (Susie Hergenrader, recreation services manager; Doug Green, parks support superintendent and Renee Jordan, park planning manager) accepted the city council proclamation and shared details of the department’s success:

  • Over 2,000 memberships sold at the newly renovated Sam Johnson Center (SJC)
  • Citywide rec center memberships top 30,000
  • Youth sports events draw over 40,000 participants
  • 49,000 residents sign up for leisure classes and camps
  • Thousands of trail users enjoy seeing the City by bike and on foot

Susie spoke of some free or very affordable events happening in honor of National Park and Recreation Month:

Mayor Harry LaRosiliere was sure to mention our nationally accredited Parks and Recreation department is “….a key contributor to Plano’s reputation as a City of Excellence.”  The department celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2018.
