Shield those Pupils: It’s Workplace Eye Safety Awareness Month

eye safety at work

Did you know work-related eye injuries don’t only happen in outdoor environments? You can just as easily experience an eye accident in an office setting. Too much screen time can be harmful. March is Workplace Eye Health and Safety Month, a time to focus on potential hazards.

When you see a mechanic working on a vehicle, lawn crew mowing a yard or a lab technician working with chemicals, they should all have at least one thing in common – a pair of safety glasses over their eyes. For risk management professionals, dealing with eye protection is one of the most important topics. Loss of eyesight, for any reason, will negatively impact your daily life. Employers are obligated to ensure workers protect their eyes any time there is a risk of injury.

eye strainWere you wearing safety glasses the last time you changed the oil in your car, mowed your lawn or used chemicals to clean your bathroom? Eye injuries can occur anywhere. In fact, almost half of all eye injuries happen at home. The American Academy of Ophthalmology recommends every home have at least one pair of safety glasses.

Safety glasses are very inexpensive and can be found at any hardware store.  Statistics show wearing eye protection prevents 90% of eye injuries. Visit the American Academy of Ophthalmology for more info.
