Get a Handle on Tub-time Hazards and Avoid Slipping into an Accident

Bathtub safety with sign

Your days are filled with routine activities you do without really thinking – like bathing, for instance. This everyday act could lead to pain, as bathrooms are one of the most dangerous rooms in a house. According to the Center for Disease Control, drowning is one of the leading causes of unintentional death and it can occur in only a few inches of water. The National Institute on Aging reports 80 percent of falls for those aged 65 and older occur in the bathroom.

The good news is there are things you can do to minimize or prevent the risk of injury while bathing and showering.

  • Invest in no-slip mats. It’s a quick and inexpensive way to help prevent slips and falls in the tub.
  • Place a no-slip mat or rug outside the bath area.
  • Install a slip-resistant safety bar. Having a safety bar or handle nearby provides balance and lowers chances for slips and falls when exiting wet surfaces.
  • Place all essential items (soap, shampoo, towels, etc.) within easy reach.
  • Don’t leave children alone in the bath. They can drown in as little as 1-inch of water.
  • Use a padded device to cover faucets and knobs to avoid injury.
  • Check the water temperature to be sure it’s not too hot.

Studies show there are health benefits to taking a nice warm soak in the tub. The practice soothes sore muscles, lowers blood pressure and promotes a good night’s sleep. Please, soak safely.
