Adopt this 2019 Resolution to Save Money on Rx

Save on Cost of Meds WEB

The cost of prescription drugs is about 20% of our total healthcare expenses and prices continue to increase. Our health plan is self-funded, which means you have a direct impact on the premiums you pay by the medical decisions that you make as the City and YOU fund all of our medical costs. You can help keep your costs low by being an engaged consumer and taking advantage of the resources available to you at no additional cost.

Did you know some medications on our plan cost over $200,000? The maximum 30-day copay for a Tier 3 drug is $60. So the amount you are paying at the pharmacy is only a small portion of the actual cost of the drug. The City pays the remaining balance.

Here are some steps you can take to possibly lower the cost of your medicines:

  • Review the 2019 Prescription Drug List and the Drug Exclusions List on the Human Resources website to see if your medication is covered and determine the drug’s “tier” category.
  • Purchase a 90-day supply of maintenance medications and only pay what a 60-day supply would cost at retail pharmacies. Maintenance medications can also be purchased through the UHC OptumRX home delivery program which saves you and the plan even more money.
  • Use PlanoCRX if your brand-name drug qualifies for $0 copay. There is no out-of-pocket expense for employees, pre-65 retirees or dependents on the UnitedHealthcare medical plan. Details of the program are provided at planocrx.com. Direct all questions to PlanoCRX at 866-488-7874.
  • Work with Jordan White at Compass to price medications with different pharmacies. She can also see if a prescription change is needed (call 855-777-0533) and will work directly with your physician and pharmacy to get the prescription changed. Here is an employee’s testimonial:

“Jordan is always there for us and is usually able to respond immediately. A family member needs very specific, expensive medicines. She is always trying to find us the most cost-effective ways to get our prescriptions. Love Compass!”

Also, don’t forget to budget for your annual $100 individual/family deductible. If you have any questions, contact the HR Benefits Team at 972-941-7115.
